The value of the customer interview

This week I’ve been in a bunch of calls with Product Managers.

I started building my course and skipped the ‘talking to users’ part.

But, I made up for it. I sent out an open invitation on Linkedin to fill every nook and cranny of my calendar.

The response was great. I got about 20 bookings in the first day or so.

My first take-away from this experience is that it is so valuable to talk to your target audience.

The insights you get from people explaining their problems to you is magical.

The answers to the problems they have = your course material

How they describe their problems = your sales page copy

My second take-away, is that even though it can sometimes be uncomfortable to hop on a call, it disappears the moment the call starts (usually).

For a rookie runner, the hardest part of going for a run is putting your sneakers on and getting out the door.

Once you start the run, the difference between 1k or 4k is not that difficult to realize.

Interviews are similar.

It’s uncomfortable to picture yourself speaking to 10 strangers in a week, but if you just book them and hop on the call, the rest takes care of itself.

My final take-away is that it was awesome to see a common thread with all the problems PMs told me they struggled with.

I’ll take this specific problem and build a free mini course out of it, as a lead magnet for the actual course.

Tweaking your life systems

Ever had a goal you just didn’t seem to action? Or a problem you encounter every week?

For me the answer is hell yes.

Lately I’m trying to apply a more systemized approach to more of life as relying on self-disciple or perfect memory doesn’t seem to work great for me.

To give you example, I really enjoy writing this newsletter and I’d like it to grow.

So… the goal is grow the newsletter to 1000 subs within the next year (currently 300ish)

The problem is that it doesn’t really grow by itself. It needs a social channel for more people to discover it.

But I’m not the biggest social media person, so putting out tweets or videos doesn’t come natural to me.

To achieve the goal of newsletter growth, I need to systematically post good content to Twitter.

So my system for achieving newsletter growth is

  • Two tweets per day, every day

  • One thread per week

  • Engage with bigger and mid-size accounts in my niche

Can you think of any goals you have that are lacking a system?

Video about improving (public) speaking

I’m all about the filler words. I think in Dutch uuuhhhm might actually be an official word.

This video demonstrates beautifully the impact of swapping filler words with silence.

I’m trying to integrate this in my everyday speech. This way, it will feel more natural when trying to avoid them in calls or for talks.

Going down a bit of a rabbit hole with this creator (Vinh Giang). I think he’s awesome.
